Introduction:
Links to articles from respected news sources tell the story.
This is a story told partly through links to more than 600 pages
of articles from some of the world's best news sources. For
example, there is a link to an ABC News article that says that the
CIA taught Arabs the techniques of terrorism, and then an Arab started
his own school to teach terrorism.
There are links to articles from CNN and other sources that begin
to count the more than 3,000,000 people the U.S. government has
killed in a little over 30 years.
There is a link to an official U.S. government document, from a
U.S. government web site, that says that the CIA aided in killing
a democratically elected leader in Chile, and then supported the
violent dictator who replaced him.
There is a link to an ABC News article that says that U.S. government
military involvement in Afghanistan began 21 years ago.
You can see an official oil company document, from the company
web site, that discusses why there is interest in building a gas
pipeline through Afghanistan. You can read official testimony about
this to the U.S. government.
You can read a May 1995 article, "Weapons at War" that
says, "In the past ten years, parties to 45 current conflicts
have taken delivery of over $42 billion worth of U.S. weaponry."
If you are new to reading about U.S. involvement in other countries,
you may find this chapter of this book useful: To
understand the present conflict, consider the past. The present
conflict in Afghanistan is linked to the removal of President Mossadegh
of Iran in 1953. He wanted his country to own its oil fields, but
the CIA opposed him.
As background material, you may be interested to know that the
U.S. has more than 6 times the percentage of its citizens in prison
as European countries. Links are provided to develop this statistic
for comparison of the U.S. and the United Kingdom. There is also
help for doing your own research, should you want that.
New links to stories are added to this book frequently. The book
started as a short letter to friends supplying a few links and providing
some explanation.
The author of this book is a U.S. citizen who loves the United
States passionately, and wants to take the time to understand his
country's problems.
Stylistic differences Note that when there
are stylistic differences, quotes are changed to the style used
in this book. So, for example, US [no periods] in a quoted story
becomes U.S. [with periods] in this book. If making changes might
have an effect on the meaning, no changes are made.
